Google Business Profile Guide: How to Rank on Google Maps

How to create, verify and optimize a Google Business Profile so nearby customers can find your business, and how to turn it into a freelance skill.

When someone searches for "clinic near me" or "best restaurant in Johar Town", Google shows a map with a few businesses at the top. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, formerly called Google My Business (GMB). It is free, and for many local businesses it brings more calls and visits than a website.

This guide explains how to set up and improve a profile. If you want to turn it into a skill that earns, see the end of the article.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile is a free listing that controls how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps: your name, address, phone number, opening hours, photos, services and reviews. Customers can call you, get directions or visit your website straight from the listing.

Step 1: Create your profile

  1. Sign in with a Google account the business will keep long term.
  2. Search for your business name on Google Business Profile and choose "Add your business" if it is not listed.
  3. Enter the exact business name, the main category and the address (or service area for businesses that visit customers).
  4. Add your phone number and website, if you have one.

Use your real business name only. Adding extra keywords to the name can lead to suspension.

Step 2: Verify your business

Google needs to confirm that your business is real before it shows your profile fully. Depending on your business, verification may be by phone, text, email, video or postcard. Follow the method Google offers, and make sure the details you submit match your real signage and documents.

Step 3: Complete every section

Step 4: Earn and answer reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest trust signals. Ask happy customers to leave a review (share your review link on WhatsApp after a sale or service) and reply to every review politely, including negative ones. Never buy fake reviews; Google can remove them and penalize the profile.

Step 5: Post updates and keep information current

Share offers, news and new photos regularly, and update your hours and phone number whenever they change. Active profiles tend to look more trustworthy to customers.

How Google decides who ranks

Google says local results are mostly based on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and website mentions). You cannot control distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence with the steps above. No one can guarantee a number one spot.

Turn this into a freelance skill

Most small businesses in Pakistan either do not have a profile or have an incomplete one. If you learn to set up, verify and optimize profiles properly, you can offer it as a service to local shops, clinics, schools and restaurants. It is one of the quickest local-SEO skills to learn. Our Google My Business Optimization course teaches it hands-on, and our guide on the best freelancing skills in Pakistan shows where it fits.
